Answer engine optimization, or AEO, aims to make useful information easy to discover, understand, and reference in generated answers. A practical starting point is content that answers a real question clearly, identifies its subject, and remains accurate when a passage is read on its own. It does not guarantee inclusion in an AI response.

In this podcast conversation, Jessica Hennessey, founder of Resonate Online and builder of Better Sites, discusses what she calls fragile content: writing that loses its meaning when separated from the rest of a page.

Test whether a passage survives being copied

Consider this sentence: “Our approach solves this faster, so you can focus on what matters.” Outside its surrounding page, neither the approach nor the problem is clear.

An illustrative rewrite is more useful: “A lead-routing workflow assigns each eligible inquiry to an available sales owner and escalates overdue responses.” The reader can understand the subject and action without reconstructing the entire article.

That is the strongest practical application of Hennessey's discussion. Name the process, explain the mechanism, and include the condition or limitation that matters. Clear writing helps readers as well as systems attempting to interpret the page.

Use structure to explain the answer

Headings, short definitions, comparisons, and worked examples are valuable when they serve the question. Adding an FAQ to every page or repeating a keyword in every heading does not make weak information useful.

For a buying comparison, a table can expose the tradeoff. For an implementation question, a sequence can clarify dependencies. For a calculation, an example with labeled assumptions is more useful than an unsupported claim that results are “significant.”

The goal is not to make every paragraph sound like a definition. Give the reader a clear answer, then develop the evidence and reasoning that make it worth trusting.

Keep technical claims grounded in platform guidance

The episode offers a practitioner's interpretation of AI visibility. Different answer systems retrieve and process information differently; they should not be treated as one universal mechanism.

For Google specifically, Google Search Central's AI features guidance says normal SEO best practices remain relevant. Google states there are no additional technical requirements or special schema needed for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Supporting pages must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet, and appearance is not guaranteed.

Our application is straightforward: keep content accessible, maintain sound indexing and internal links, use accurate structured data where appropriate, and improve the substance of the answer. There is no reason to replace those foundations with an invented AI checklist.

Credibility extends beyond your own website

Hennessey also emphasizes third-party sources and consistent brand information. Buyers can compare your claims with interviews, customer reviews, company listings, and independent coverage.

Treat that as a credibility program, not a scheme for manufacturing mentions. Keep profiles accurate, earn relevant coverage, and make it possible to verify the people and companies behind the claims. The Mary Shank Rockman episode article explores the human relationships behind that work.

    Measure signals without inventing certainty

The conversation questions the precision of AI visibility scores. A citation observed in a test prompt is evidence of that test, not proof that your whole market sees the same answer.

Track a consistent set of relevant questions, record the date and system, inspect cited sources, and treat changes as directional. Combine those observations with qualified inquiries, source information, buyer-reported discovery, and commercial outcomes. Do not present one metric as a complete account of influence.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Clear answers and source credibility complement technical discoverability. For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google explicitly says normal SEO best practices remain relevant and no special AI optimization is required.
    What is fragile content?
In Jessica Hennessey’s discussion, it is content that loses useful meaning when removed from its surrounding page. Improve it by naming the subject, explaining the claim, and preserving the conditions needed to interpret it.
Can structured data guarantee an AI citation?
No. Accurate structured data can describe page content, but it does not guarantee indexing, search display, or citation in an AI-generated answer. Google does not require special schema for its AI search features.
